Torrie’s story:
She was a beautiful typical child. She laughed, ran and done everything other children did. One day her mother noticed Torrie would not look at her and she also noticed that Torrie did not talk well. In her mind her mom was constantly going over and over in her mind…what is wrong? Was she always like this? Finally, after much persuasion from her mother, Melissa finally took the first step and made an appointment with the pediatrician and heard what no mother wants to hear….I think your child might be Autistic, we need to get her evaluated by a professional. The appointment was made for a year later…yes I said 1 year! During that long stressful year Melissa did everything she could to keep Torrie engaged and responsive. Torrie just would not talk and would whine and point to what she wanted. Melissa used flash cards, verbal commands, she would make Torrie touch things and try to say them. There were many times Melissa got so frustrated for Torrie they would both just sit and cry. What kind of mom was I to not be help my child? The struggle lasted for many years in Melissa’s mind. The day finally came for them. They went through all the tests…some were not so fun…in fact they were pure misery. They doctors told Melissa that day that Torrie was indeed Autistic…they gave her a behavior plan and some suggestions for school placement and sent her on her way. Melissa immediately began with the flash cards, coloring, verbal prompts
..it was all so tiring for Torrie. She was then entered into speech therapy. Total disaster….Melissa was told Torrie would never talk, have a conversation and might very well need complete special education for school. Torrie was diagnosed at the age of 4….she is now 14 and is in a general education classroom with her friends. She talks, carries her own weight in a conversation and only needs limited help in school. She is the joy and sunshine to her parents and her grandparents. Any contribution would be appreciated to further this campaign and help Torrie reach her goal of getting this R2d2-unit-for-autism-awareness built. She can not wait to get in the crowd with her peers and help someone realize that they can overcome obstacles if they try and never give up.
