It Takes a Horseman – Angels of Hell #1 Review :: A Throw BacK Thread

We’ve all heard the story of the Biblical apocalypse, heralded by the Four Horsemen.  But we’ve rarely seen the Horsemen as protagonists.  That is the premise behind Apocalyptic Vision Comics’ Angels of Hell.  The first issue, which recently was successfully funded on Kickstarter, follows the Horsemen as they embark on their new mission – the search for the last blood heir of Christ to help the remnants of humanity recover in the aftermath of the apocalypse.  Standing in the way is the demon lord Asmodeus and various other demons.  At this point, other than feelings of guilt caused by the blood of Michael, we’re not quite sure why they’re doing this, but clearly there are many more questions than answers in this first issue, as it is structured similarly to a mainstream comic and is not self-contained.  This series looks like it will be a slow burn, with more revealed over time.

The storytelling by writer Chris Reichard is action-oriented, with a feel similar to an action movie following a group of antiheroes – a supernatural Expendables, if you will, with greater abilities and greater stakes.

The art (pencils by Karly Engracia, with inks by Vincent Alcantera) and panel layouts are reminiscent of the current Marvel style, with the colors by Davi Comodo being particularly vibrant.  The letters by Deyvison Manes are also excellent, with several types of dialogue fonts used for different characters, signifying at a glance that they’re supernatural forces.  I could easily see this as being a Big Two comic.

If you enjoy stories based in Christian mythology, supernatural action comics, or antiheroes you’ll enjoy Angels of Hell.  Follow along with the development here.
