Working It Out
The final art piece in the ‘Shadows of Ourselves’ art series. I started in black and white and ended with a dash of color, the most important part: the heart. The first piece I was inspired to do, “We Never Talk Anymore” was about a relationship losing connection and indifferently embracing their divide despite wanting much more with one another. It was a commentary about losing something special in a relationship, while the shadows showed that there is still love there, just buried.
Here, I end the series knowing that there is hope and a beautiful resolution if we embrace it and find our connection again, no matter how it is done. Yes, we face the sadness, we discuss it, we shed light onto it, but we also begin to heal and come back to what matters most in order to become one again.
This whole series is about these and so many other situations. Some funny, some heart-breaking. All important. Regular people, honest situations. That’s what ‘The Shadows of Ourselves’ is all about. What started a year ago August 2019 now ends exactly a year later, August 2020. THANK YOU for your support of it. I’ll be collecting all 100 pieces soon in a crowdfunding campaign soon, but just gotta let the economy recover a bit more for some that want to participate in it.
I hope you have all enjoyed my best work thus far. More is to come.

Aaron Lee Marshall served 452 days on Active Duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom II as a Military Police Officer attached to the 1st Infantry Division in Baqubah, Iraq. Operation: REBOOT is our peer to peer support group for all military and veterans of every age and period of service. The core objective of USASOA OP-REBOOT is to bring together and facilitate support and encouragement among service members and veterans who share common yet varied experiences while utilizing life-affirming, therapeutic and recreational activities. Each event is complete with wonderful food and beverages and music in a relaxing atmosphere.
By building trust and fellowship we seek to establish and maintain a sense of mutual support so as to combat and displace barriers that prevent us from engaging and living a healthy, positive life. Being there for each other on common ground makes a real and lasting difference. We are also proud to have partnered with Give An Hour – a nonprofit organization of mental health care professionals and psychologists who donate their time and professional services free of charge and who attend our events to provide assistance and additional support to any veteran or service member in our group.

Operation Reboot events foster a renewed sense of commardiere, brotherhood, sisterhood, and belonging paramount to the importance of being able to express the personal experiences as a service member and as a veteran.
