“I have many years of art education and I’ve been working on short stories and little funnies. How can I turn this into a career and quit my 9-to-5 retail job?”

    Hey, Rob Andersin, Tyler here.

Hope you had a great weekend.

Just wanted to let you know that there are a bunch of creators who are still working through the challenge, so if you missed a something, you still have until May 25th when the GDPR stuff goes into full effect to get this stuff done.

Now, I opened this email with a paraphrased direct message I received from someone over the weekend.

I try not to do too much work over the weekend, but I had to shoot this creator a response.

Because this question is kind of THE question, right?

    I mean, let’s face it…

Yes, you might listen to ComixLaunch because you’re looking for concrete tips on how to get your next project seriously over-funded…

But for many of my listeners, a single funded project isn’t the ultimate goal.

Most of you are looking to either create full-time or make the time you do spend creating as successful as possible.

And so the question asked above is relevant, at least to some extent, to all of us.

I realize that some of you may already be creating full-time.

And others may love their “real job” and have no intention of ever leaving it.

But even in those two cases, I’m sure you’re interested in reaching more people with your art and seeing more rewards for the time and energy you put in.

So, I’m going to share my answer that question (to the best of my ability) in as concise terms as possible.

If you want the full, step-by-step, take you by the hand answer and actionable plan, that’s what I have for you inside of ComixLaunch Pro.

To answer this question, we need to understand 2 Ms and 5 Levers of Success.

    The 2 Ms

Can this creator ever quit his retail job and build a career making short stories and funnies?

    Of course he can.

He can quit his job today and spend the rest of the day writing shorts and drawing funnies.

    Job quit. Career begun.

But that’s not what most people really want to know, though.

They want to know how they can REPLACE their current day job with an equally (or much more) lucrative job around their creative passions… and that’s a bigger challenge.

The answer to that comes by first thinking about the MARKET and the MODEL.

Is there a MARKET for what you are creating?

And are you clear about what that market is?

Because there is literally ZERO market for the doodles you do in the margins of your notebook while zoning off at your weekly office meeting…

But that doesn’t mean you can’t build a creative business based on stick figures.

    MC Hammer Age

    https://xkcd.com/

Randall Monroe is clear about who he creates XKCD for… and it turns out the MARKET for his brand of math-based humor is large enough to support his creation.

    Is your market big enough?

    Do you even know?

    Probably something to consider.

Is there a MODEL for your creative career?

The second question to ask yourself is, is there a model for what you’re trying to do, embodied in the form of an existing person or business?

Has someone else built something like what you want to build?

    Have multiple people?

As the saying goes, success leave clues.

People who are where you want to be, with few exceptions, got there as a result of taking specific actions, building specific habits, and NOT doing a whole lot of things that unsuccessful people do.

Do you know what those things are?

Have you picked a model for your creative career?

Have you obsessed over that person or business, read everything they’ve put out, bought all their stuff, and deconstructed, to the best of your ability, how they got where they got?

And have you surrounded yourself with other creators who are trying to build something similar to what you’re trying to build?

Recreating the wheel is dumb when the world is full of models.

    Have you found yours yet?

    Hit Reply and Tell Me…

    1) What market are you trying to serve with your art?

    2) Who are you modeling your career after?

Now, if you’re hazy about either of these two questions, that’s common.

But think about it, dream about it, pray about it… whatever you have to do.

When you bring the answers to those two questions into better focus, the next steps get to be a whole lot clearer.
