SHARE-ME:: Vet-Con Deserves your support

Veteran to Convention(Vet->Con) is a program that is run by the non-profit organization, The Veteran’s Wife. Vet->Con’s mission is to help veterans have a fun, stress free weekend at a comic book convention. We have hopes to expand beyond comic conventions to include a variety of different conventions. When we receive a ticket donation for a convention we then find a veteran, and their family, to give the tickets to. After a family is selected we give them the tickets along with a gas card and some cash for spending money. The idea is to give the family a fun weekend without financial concerns. We also contact creators that will be at the convention to see if they’re willing to donate some artwork or books to the family when they arrive. We put the info of everyone that has made a donation into a newsletter that we put out following the convention, along with some pictures of the family at the con so the donors can see what they helped achieve. Our first convention was a big success! The family had a blast at their very first convention, and if it were not for Vet->Con they most likely would have never made it out to a comic con. We had several local businesses that donated gifts for the family, including the comic book store that donated the tickets. At the convention there were 15 artists, creators, and publishers that agreed to donate art and books to the family. We put together a scavenger hunt for the family to help get them out and around the convention floor and talking to the different creators. We’re currently contacting different conventions to seek ticket donations so we can bring more veterans to conventions. We’re also seeking sponsors to help fund the project, such as the gas cards, spending money, and tickets to conventions that were unable to donate.

from a Fans POV:

“We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Fantasticon. The entire family had fun at the event. It was a great honor to be awarded the prize package. All the vendors were extremely welcoming and donated wonderful items to be awarded to us. This experience gave us a chance to bond as a family and that is the best gift of all.” -Loren (USMC) & Josh (USMC)
