The Devil Inside[r] with Josh Blaylock:

Every week(ish) we’re joining Devil’s Due Commander-in-Chief Josh Blaylock to get a special inside-scoop on what it’s like to run a comic book company, all the while creating his own comics, straight from the source.

    Devil-Van Diaries:

When we sent this newsletter last week, I’d just embarked on the beginning of a nearly two week tour and was in Louisville. I’m home now, having rolled into Nashville as well, in total hitting two comic-cons, three store signings, and making a couple bonus shop visits. Our trusty DD chariot VANOS performed well, carrying our inventory (as well as me), from place to place, also doing his job as an actual camper conversion for those nights when the drive is too long and hotels are few and far between.

To be blunt, the turnout at the cons was rough. Both were well managed, but attendance was tight and it wasn’t easy to power through. If there ever was a period of time to argue that “Mercury in Retrograde” is a real thing, this would’ve been it, as there were obstacles at every turn. That just happens sometimes and there’s nothing you can do about it except move on to the next one. Meanwhile, the company was good all along the way, and Louisville was one of the more fun celebrity-attended cons, where we found ourselves eating in the green room next to the likes of Alice Cooper and Richard Dreyfus, and ‘90s crush Joey Lauren Adams to name a few. So there are worse ways to spend a weekend.

(Lord of Gore’s DB Stanley and Daniel Leister joining me and Brian Atkins for some after-con sustenance).

Store signings were solid! If you visit them, the owners went all in, and all grabbed a healthy stock of Devil’s Due product for their shelves! Go visit before Christmas shoppers clear them out!

After Louisville I lost DB Stanley, Daniel Leister and Brian Atkins as they returned to their homelands in the frozen North and flew solo. Still, it wouldn’t be a con story without adding that not only did I see some great shops, but also some other fine establishments that kept me going in the sprawling town of honkey tonk hipsters:

    • Barista Parlor for all your fine java needs (heads up, I’m a proud coffee snob). I hit this place every morning after a recommendation from my sister – thanks Kellynn – and happily drank pour overs and Topo Chico! For other con road warriors, this is a great place to work.
    • The Crying Wolf for some great cocktails and quick burgers, surrounded by taxidermy and heavy metal – found on google maps advertised as being “For Metalheads with Punk Kids”
    • The Little Octopus – one of the highlights of the trip, I tagged along for dinner with Joe Pruett, one of the heads of Aftershock Comics, Battlestar Galactica / Dirk Gently’s own Aaron Douglas, and a fun group of people for a great night, and a couple of other follow-up bars.
Me bugging Chief from Battlestar Galactica, asking nerdy questions about fixing spaceships.

    Why I Picked…  Final Street

This is a new column where Josh chimes in with reasons as to why he sought out certain comics for Devil’s Due’s line.

Final Street is the brainchild of Scott Schmidt and Brian Atkins, and is a no-apologies homage to all things ‘80s and ‘90s fighting games. Especially those now classic side-scrollers like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage.

It was at New York Comic-Con 2017 that I ran into Atkins, who gave me a sample packet of his material. The creators had already done a great little Kickstarter campaign, had some amazing graphics and promotions to go with the art, and a simple, clever concept. I also knew Brian was a professional with a solid track record, Scott’s dialog was the perfect tone for this fun ride, and that the final product would come out great. The colors are a whole other element that make this book sing. The bright palette chosen by Juan Gaitan pops right off of the page like a brightly lit screen in a dark arcade.

The guys are working on the second installment right now, and there’s still time to catch up with the debut issue if you haven’t already.

Greg & Fake – These coloring machines are a Devil’s Due staple, coloring almost every issue of Mercy Sparx, Operation Nemesis, Solitary, a bajillion different covers, and more. Which one is Greg and which one is Fake? No one is sure. We believe that Greg is actually someone names Kris, and Fake is Greg, pretending not to be a Greg.

The mystery may never be solved, but as long as their email works and they’re able and willing, you’ll continue to see their work! Check out their other work on Beef Jams, American Nature, and custom illustrations on Instagram @gregandfake.

    Tin Foil Funtime

In my research working on the upcoming ArkWorld series, which takes place partially in a distant past, in a hi-tech world that is not supposed to have existed, I stumble upon some straight-up crazy information. This is where I’m sharing it!

    Comet Impact Hypothesis:

This is a theory that a huge comet or asteroid, much like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, impacted the Earth only 13,000 years ago, when humans were already a thriving species.

At a time that the planet was just barely coming out of an ice age, this impact would have  instantly caused intense melting on the ice caps that covered the Northern hemisphere. The rapid melting would have caused unimaginable flooding all over the world, and ironically, a sudden spike back INTO the Ice Age for a thousand years, as global weather patterns were disrupted.

This theory has been circulating for many years now, based upon mounting evidence found within a layer of sediment found throughout North America and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere of Earth, just how the Dinosaur extinction was first discovered. It was only until the crater from the asteroid impact was found that archaeologists finally accepted the dinosaur theory.  Until only weeks ago most thought that there actually may not be a crater to prove this  ice age impact, if the space rock landed on miles-high sheets of ice, but now, it is believed to have been discovered beneath ice in Greenland, and measures in at a whopping 19 miles wide! To add even more mind f***s to this, the rough date scientists believe it happened is perfectly in line with Plato’s claims of when Atlantis sank.

This plays right into the backstory of my upcoming series ArkWorld, and it is completely wild to have such a current ongoing development scientific discovery and human history happening that could make my fantastical story closer to reality than we ever expected.

    This month in DD history

This month in 2003, back when we were still a studio published by Image Comics, saw the release of G.I. Joe vs. Transformers, written by Josh Blaylock, coming in as the #2 title from Image just after Wanted #1. Also was issue #3 of the same title, G.I. Joe #25, and G.I. Joe Frontline #18, giving us four of the top ten selling books from Image that month.

That wraps it up for this week! Do you like these longer format emails? My God, did you actually make it this far?! Let us know! We love hearing from you.
